Nice quality, arrived sharp which was nice, and it can handle smaller stuff pretty easy. A tad heavy for light weight backpacking but trust me, you want that extra weight when it comes to chopping wood. Seems price has been inflated quite a bit! Love it!

If the axe is too dull when you get it, which it normally is, grab a stone or a grinder and sharpen it up. As someone else commented, the handle has been lacquered so it could well be leather under there but I couldn't be sure - presumably it's far more weatherproof this way and it doesn't bother me. 20 Edit: I paid way less for this hatchet several months ago. Don't expect to chop everything with this though.

I was drawn to this one primarily because it was made in the USA. I'd say the 14" would be better for splitting logs and chopping moderate diameter branches.

See the attached pictures. I had gone back and forth about getting the 14" vs. It seems like the entire product was coated with an epoxy.
