I was aware this was a high quality product before I bought it, and I wasn't disappointed. I've noticed that some colors will leave marks no matter what, while others blend out extremely effortlessly. This was meant to be a last minute gift, and as such I didn't have the luxury of returning it, compounding my disappointment further. I have been using these for many years now, and this last set has the same quality and pigment characteristics as the very first set I bought.

I’ve tried a couple of quality brands (Caran D’ache Supracolor, Derwent) that are very good but are not as vibrant as Staedtler. One of the frustrating things about buying premium stuff off Amazon is how the seller/fulfillment team seems to not care. not a good delivery).

I used this for the fine details of my watercolor Robin painting. Its much easier to get the fine work done this way, or you can leave it dry to add texture. There are a number of other techniques for these pencils and a good YouTube video can be found by searching 'Watercolour pencil techniques by Tim Fisher 'They are a first class product. I mainly use mine for illustration - you can see my snail drawing on this page - and I generally apply them as dry pencil, and then move and mix the colour around on the paper with water or solvent.

The main reason I got the larger set was because it seemed to have a better selection of earth tones and neutrals, which is important for me personally; otherwise, I would have gone with a smaller set. I have yet to try Caran D’ache Museum Aquarelle but in the meantime, the Staedtler pencils make me happy! The color options are nice as well, lots of blues and orange/reds. These watercolor pencils work pretty well; I rated four stars instead of five as there are a few minor gripes I have with the product and product delivery experience.

I'm excited to use these going forward to add detail to my paintings before washing over them with water. I'm hoping to try Faber-Castell's watercolor pencils eventually to be able to compare quality to other brands, but swatch tests I have seen show the Karat pencils as a bit more vivid and blendable than the Faber Castell, in my opinion.

very annoying. I love how vibrant these colors are when a little water is added. I notice I can find colors far quicker and more easily with the old Staedtler Karat design. .
