However, the front cover is bright, colourful and bold featuring the main character. Considering this is a childrens book I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, my daughter is now reading it and thinks it’s great. An easy read for a young teenager. This is a funny, entertaining debut chapter book for children aged 7+ written by TV presenter Stephen Mulhern.

Max lives with his chatty family in East London where he learns a trick each day and shares it with others. This book has quite large spaced out text and black and white illustrations thoughout making it an engaging book for young readers.

The characters are great and easy to identify with. We'll definitely be looking out for the next book in this new series.

Max Mullers loves to do magic. But when Max discovers a rather unusual -looking chest at Gran's antique shop he realises that anything is possible! Max has a problem with a certain boy at school and try’s so hard to avoid him, and then there’s the crayfish twins on the market, one day max opens a chest in his grans shop and his life and magic skills take on a whole new level. My daughter was also keen to learn the tricks at the end of the book by following the guide too.

It has a nice underlying message for children about believing in yourself and following your dreams. This was a fun addition. To earn a bit of money he helps his dad out on his market stall after school while his dad gets his dinner.

We were rooting for the bullies to get their comeuppance. Max Mullers loves doing magic tricks. Then goes on to his grand shop to pick up there fog lucky and he lives this part of the day when he gets to talk to his gran (and have what ever she’s baked that day).
