I have much more understanding of myself as a cyclical being, more compassion for my ever-changing abilities/moods/needs and an ability to plan my life around such changes that makes the questions of when to create, when to socialize, and when to cocoon myself a lot more manageable and, dare I say it, magical. The main reason I am so freaking thrilled with this book is that I now have a reason why I feel the way I do. Breaking down the “seasons of the cycle” into winter, spring, summer and fall - and highlighting the typical energies that are present during each - was illuminating for me.

I came away from this book with so much respect for the menstrual cycle and an understanding of how I as a man can support my partner (and the other menstruating women in my life) during the phases of her journey. This book is up there for me with Brene Brown, Tara Brach and the Big Book of AA in terms of how much of an impact its had on me.

But after hearing the authors talk about the "extatic states" they experienced during bleeding and the incredible power that could come from living into one's cycle, I was intrigued. Because I know in a week or so, spring will reappear, and I’ll slowly start to return from the shadows where I’ve cultivated enough energy to return to the task of tending to others once again. Fear has been replaced by sweet acceptance, and I lay out the welcome mat for each season to come, stay for a bit, and then graciously walk it to the door and bid it farewell until next time.

My partner and I now have a way of communicating, making plans, exploring sexual intimacy and expressing needs that have all been enhanced because of what we learned in Wild Power. My only regret is not having found this book sooner. Although I console myself in the knowledge that timing is everything, I may not have had the ability to grasp such concepts before now. Wild Power has helped bring awareness to my femininity and masculinity that I hold in such revere.

Knowing that when I start to contract and retreat inward is more a sign that winter is coming (no, not that winter GOT fans) instead of a cycle of depression that is out of my control has given me so much enlightenment and peace. I always assumed hormones played a part in why I would start to feel that can-not-get-out-of-bed type of low, but I honestly thought more than anything I was fighting a lifelong battle of depression. I’m not someone who’s battled depression all her life as I’ve always believed (although at times, hell yes), but I am someone who has gone through an entire cycle of seasons in one month, each and every month and never realized what that meant.

As per their instructions, I've now been tracking my cycle for a while, and it's an understatement to say that it's changed my life. Wild Power is an important read for men too. Sometimes there's a book that knocks you off your seat and forces you to PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR LIFE in a totally new way.
