I was left wanting more once I had finished, mainly because I loved all the characters so much. Completely worth a step into the unknown with this new author’s debut novel. Compelling.

The reader goes on an exciting and thrilling adventure as we journey back in time, where we meet a younger Betty (Elisabeth) as her daily life is turned upside down when she’s recruited, trained and finally becomes a member of the SOE (Special Operations Executive) and given her first clandestine mission. The attention to detail describing Elisabeth’s adventures during WW2 is truly excellent, and for me, really visceral as most of the action takes place where I’ve lived and visited in the past! Her recruitment to the SOE and terrifying adventures in wartorn France are told with authentic detail and humanity.

Operation Moonlight is such an easy read even though it’s packed with historical facts, Louise Morrish really does know how to write a compelling read and keeps the reader engaged the whole way through. However, as we discover more about Tali and her life and watch the beautiful relationship between Tali and Betty, I wanted to know what happened in both times equally. I can't wait to see what she writes next.

It is written so well by Louise Morrish and it’s her debut novel ( it does not read like that! So duly ordered it ( even though I’m not supposed to be buying books! Each timeline is equally riveting in different ways.

Louise Morrish's extensive research on the SOE and wartime Britain and France shine through, and I had a most enjoyable history lesson in the reading as well as a thoroughly good read. However, this is a dual timeline, so we venture between 2018 & 1944, and things in 2018 are as intriguing as the events that unfolded in 1944, so no matter which year it is, there is something that has you utterly invested.
It's such a lovely debut novel, moving and enthralling, and such an important storyline to remind us of the courageous acts that helped bring the war to an end. The 2018 story is not quite so edge of the seat, but is a delightful story of a woman and her carer, and the approaching finale of a long life lived. Beautiful.
