When I picked this book up, I thought the biggest bit of drama would be what happens when the lake freezes and the dead begin to wander…. Seeing those two finally find each other only to face such traumatic moments straight away was emotional and thought-provoking.

Its a literal love letter to the vastness and scale of a world that we have divided and claimed ownership over, seeing our differences and forgetting to take the time to ask what are our similarities, what connects us. I’m the last person to read a zombie genre book, so I was surprised by a friend’s recommendation, but this is a whole lot more. Charlton has a subtle gift of being able to move mellifluously from gentle, poetic imagery, to panic-in-your-chest phrases which make this an exciting page turner and a great relaxing read, all in one.

I can't wait to read it. You wont want to put the book down due to this very reason, you have to read on because you need to know exactly what's happening next for any peace of mind. Foyles Bookshop explained the appeal of this novel perfectly in their review, saying “Wranglestone really has it all and is sure to delight readers with its characters and story, whilst also promoting the normalcy of gay relationships, without the usual trials and anguish of so many LGBT stories”.

What I love about this book is that it is a love story between two boys that is not issue led, there's no huge coming out drama, this is a world where loving someone of the same sex isn't important because there is so much more happening of greater importance and where goodness reigns. What is happening to the feared undead? This book looks great. The lake’s residents live safely on their small islands until Winter, when the frozen lake surface allows the Restless Dead to shamble to their doors once again.

It was this aspect that took me by surprise, and I especially enjoyed the last 25% of the book which was surprising and tense. If this is his first novel, I can’t wait for the next. As a gay reader, enjoy a relatable story and representation!
