The light pole slides in and out for easy storage during the winter. I don't think these would be great freestanding, of the four I bought, the one that stands freely is wobbly. I really like and wanted to order another pair but the price has now doubled! They are correct with their recommendation for a pole every 12-15’.

With the string lights if placed properly could use the eye hook to connect the pole. Update 7/24/2023: I bought another 2-pack this year and now the poles are all closer together, anywhere from 12' to 15' apart. Some of the parts that connect were bent and I needed to fix them so they would fit together.

I used them in a pot, since they couldn’t stick in the ground on our deck. The light strings can (have) disconnected from one another if we move a pole while lights are strung up.

We spaced the poles further apart than suggested, which made one pole bend inward a little. These ARE well made and pretty sturdy.

. You really should take their suggested distance of approx 15 feet apart.

The expensive deck railing ones snapped in the first install. But this was easily fixed by just pulling the pole out of the grass and repositioning it in the grass (even while lights were attached). I love that the top of it is an open O vs a closed O so you don’t need to take the bulbs on and off if you need to slide the string of lights through as you're trying to get the sections even. Nice and strong, easy to install.

The zip ties prevent this. I had to cut off the spikes off the bottom, piece of cake. I set concrete & pipe into the base of the planters. Highly Recommend!
