I’ve heard a lot of these stories from the inside, but I really cherish reading it from the man himself, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this when it was released. Written with the smooth wisdom of an eighty-three-year-old, who is proud of Navy aviation and his dog-fighting days, but isn’t just writing for wide-eyed and hair-on-fire teenagers dreaming of Mach 2. Take note - this book is as much about leadership as it is about Topgun or Naval Aviation in general.

From my view from the cheap seats, it is dead-on accurate. Better. A former Bro and four-star Admiral remarked to me « I’ve met almost every former instructor that has worked at Topgun over the last 50 years, and they’re the same guy ». All us former « Bro’s » recognize this, and to most of us who have seen it from the inside, we recognize Dan Pedersen is the one who inculcated that culture on day 1.

It is the calm recollections and understandings of a full life well lived. The Topgun part doesn’t even start till page 97. That program resulted in a huge increase in our air combat success in Vietnam and is the standard for fighter tactics today.

Easy to read, flowing, insightful. Having impeccable skills and credentials, with the humility to be able to work one-on-one with others and make them better, that’s really the game-changer (hint: apply this formula in any work environment and reap the benefits). He and some of the other instructors in the Advanced Tactics Phase were trying out on me and my classmates what they had learned and were developing into more effective tactics to improve Navy Phantom drivers results against North Vietnam MiG drivers. After my second combat cruise I came back as an instructor in VF-121 as a tactics instructor and adversary pilot in the A-4 Mongoose.
