It seems that those drives being an SMR drive is the reason why. Unlike some other drives that are designed to run off of USB power from computer, this WD 16TB drive cannot, and needs mains power from a wall wart.

And if I may say, its fast and seems to be durable with no Hardware Encryption as it would really seem too. So in mathematical terms WD is legally correct in claiming 12TB, but is using sophistry to get around actually giving us 12TB in computer terminology. Compared to when I bought em, they are now half the speed. But when I had the replacement USB 3.
