“All my life,” she said, “I have been told ‘go’ and ‘come. Described as the king of winter, but also as Death itself, it is not by chance that he always appears to guide the dead to the afterlife. At the very end, Konstantin knows what he has to do to set his daughter free forever; his love for her is strong enough that he never hesitates. Vasya is certainly the main protagonist around which the narrative revolves, but her story is intertwined with the events of some minor characters.

The Bear and the Nightingale was absolutely beautiful and enchanting! Still, it is a beautiful depiction of a deep winter world where families huddle together around their oven to sleep and stay warm and where the coming snow cuts off entirely the rural community Vasya calls home from the rest of the world. I’ll refrain from delving too much into any one of these, especially the brothers, for fear of giving something away, but suffice to say that the brothers are opposed to one another and Vasya finds herself caught in the middle. The culture, religion, the exotic wintry setting, and the supernatural elements are the other aspects that held my interest.

Everyone is afraid to wander in the woods at night because people who has crossed paths with him has never returned alive. What I liked most about this character is her refusal to be content with what society decides for her.

To save her village and her family from this ominous threat, Vasya defies everyone and uses her gift to find someone that holds all her answers. Meanwhile, there is a frost-demon that does everything to ensure him and Vasilisa’s paths cross. The story was told in third person pov and I’m glad that we get to enjoy the story from different perspectives.
