Some readers may be put off by the reveal at the beginning of the book by identification of the murderer. In fact, we know the culprit from the outset! Unusually, there are no mysteries for the reader to unravel this time. This is a topical theme to the book which made me shiver as I remember the fate of Sarah Everard and her trust in the police officer who raped and murdered her.

Will the resilience and determination to gain retribution for a sister’s murder win the internal fight to balance justice with personal revenge? Although the protagonist is identified from the outset the twists and turns and reactions of the other characters to the protagonist provide the reader with sufficient anticipation to wonder how he will ultimately get his comeuppance. I couldn't put my Kindle down as I read cover to cover in a single night. The issue of who we place our trust in to safeguard our well-being is an ongoing debate with so many enquiries into the behaviour of public servants.

. Whilst this may not be the best book in the series, if you liked previous DCI Ryan tales, you'll enjoy this one too 👌
However I enjoyed this alternative style as it provided a unique opportunity to delve into the mind and character of what was a disturbing and deeply deceptive police officer with a hidden lifestyle. I always look forward to a new offering from LJ Ross and in particular, a new DCI Ryan novel.
However, all of the familiar characters are involved in an interesting manhunt. Just for the non believers - sunset over Bamburgh👍
