While it told the story of an octopus that became angry due to frustration and change in his environment, it also taught him step by step how to physically relax not only his body but his mind. The first time reading it to my daughter who has anxiety, I found myself using the steps on myself and actually relaxing. First, yes-this is a rather wordy book; however, it describes, in great detail, how to relax the entire body and works on breathing exercises. As an adult, I felt myself trying them and I loved it!

This is a fantastic book, and not just for kids who are angry or anxious but for everyone, including parents. Then the next day read it again and build with the next one. If you feel like the book is too much for one sitting, simply read the beginning story and work through one of the techniques that is described. It’s a very in-depth look at anger and how a child can work through each part of the body to help calm themselves.

Also, the book is beautifully illustrated. Now every time she gets upset and starts to become anxious, I remind her of octopus or actually read the book again to her so she can calm down and solve her problem or get out of the anxious state by herself. I highly recommend, especially during a time where so many children are dealing with anxiety and frustration.

It’s a good exercise/life skill to practice with children that could help them throughout their lives! I highly recommend it!
