I would say that this book does suffer from being too long, with some plot threads that could probably have been cut, and some scenes that outstay their welcome. But perhaps Sansom has earned the right to ramble a little when he's produced such a great series overall. This story focuses on the theft of a book written by Queen Catherine Parr, and this part of the mystery is really strong, with a good cast of suspects and a great reveal at the end. Henry VIII is dying, and Shardlake isn't sure of his position under his son, Edward.
He's also still pretty wobbly after the Mary Rose incident in Heartstone (a great book).
