I really enjoyed how looking back on events was used in this story, it brought another layer to the plot and characters that I didn't expect. With no holds barred regarding the social climbing of this group of friends and their family, Goodman delves into the nitty-gritty of privilege and the behind-the-scenes reality makes for some intentionally uncomfortable reading at times regarding the lives of those who on the surface appear to have it all. The media could not be loaded. I can see that this is perhaps a more acquired taste of genre, but as a YA read, I think it gets it spot on, with a fulfilling conclusion to a strong character-driven book that is both well written and indeed well structured.

This YA mystery seems at first a little predictable but hold that thought because it's more than it first appears. With the age and social group of Jill and her peers, there’s no denying that Goodman has captured the mannerisms, colloquialisms, behaviour, and thoughts perfectly here.

At first this book was slow, I thought I will hate it because of how slow it was, I even started reading the first pages and moved on to another book but I decided to take it back, and boy it did not disappoint, everyone talking about the plot twist but to be honest I was suspicious of everyone, every single soul and when it all came to the killer I was so happy they were able to get him and send him to jail, this book kinda reminds me of agggtm which is the book who got me into thrillers, and to be honest this book what’s amazing, yes it’s way to slow and yes you have to be suspicious of everyone but it’s right under your nose literally the good guy, cause psycho are always the nice ones, 10/10, I will recommend this book. For the targeted audience of this book, They Wish They Were Us is so well-written. There's a death, friends, girlfriends and boyfriends and then retrospect.

Think rich, preppy high schoolers in a US private school. If you want that Gossip Girl feel and this age range for a quick entertaining mystery/thriller, this is ideal.
