all the broken places

Reviews

Paula A. Howard

As a reader do you feel sympathy towards Gretel, the one thing I am sure of is that this book was capable of pulling at my heartstrings and this story will stay with me long after Ive finished reading it. The author has created a thought provoking follow up on how childhood experiences shape our adult life and the choices you make and whether it’s truly possible to erase your past and start over with no regrets!

Teresa

We first meet Gretel as a 91-year-old refined lady, living in a luxury apartment worth millions, with only four neighbours and with a shady garden for communal use. All the Broken Places is a compelling, compulsive page turner. Gretel’s life was full of fear, regrets and anxiety about whether someone would ‘out’ her one day. Unknown to him, Gretel came upon a young boy about Bruno’s age who admitted he had a friend who visited him from the other side of the compound.

It is 1946 now and they worked hard to hide their German accent, but unknown to them both their secret nationality and change of name became obvious. Gretel made friends with their nine-year-old son Henry who was an avid reader just like Gretel. ⁣If you read only 1 book about the aftermath of WWII on people’s psyche, this book is it!

I haven’t read a John Boyne book that I haven’t absolutely loved, his writing is just truly genius! ⁣

The chapters are short and punchy. I thought she was brave, had scruples and acted with tenderness. Gretel’s story is an absolute cracker. The story telling is sublime.

He would tell her story. All Th Broken Places by John BoyneI give this book 5 starsThis is the sequel to The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas and is narrated by Bruno’s older sister Gretel. ⁣⁣One of the best books I have read, just as amazing as his The Boy in the Striped Pajamas!
