I recognised the truth of the Cambridge scenes in all their lurid contempiraneity, though against the backdrop of the Master's Lodge where I had my supervisions in the mid-1960s. It is a delightful novel, and keeps its surprises coming right to the end.

Loved this book from start to finish. I had mostly come across this book via positive social media posts, which isn't always the best reason for buying a book. Beautiful tender at times, heart wrenchingly awkward, funny and powerful.

History of Art (and the way in which Cahill weaves it into the different phases of the narrative) supplies a convincing backdrop to the action (the Caravaggio/Tiepolo opposition being exactly the right track to follow on so many levels). If his work continues in this vein I will certainly be going back for more! I loved the sensibility, all the artistic detail, and how carefully small things echo through the story.

The voice of a character is so important and in the last I have found that when describing love and sexual encounters the voices were wrong and note how we as gay men see or describe sex. The book is extremely well written and having lived in London around this time I immediately recognised both the art and gay scene. I have been searching for a novel that focuses around a character that I kind of resonate with and was told in an adult, non flowery way.

5/5)Hate to love characters? The book doesn’t pan out the way I expected.

Until then, Don had only known school, Cambridge as a student and then teacher. Don is a complex man and not a particularly likeable character, but he is interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed creating an entire spread in my journal and writing thoughts as the story developed.
