It opens to dark green inside cover pages followed by 376 with a light sheen finish, punctuated with around 150 colour illustrations, by Jemima Catlin, some of which are full page. The illustrations in the Alan Lee version are serious and atmospheric works of art that look like something an Art Museum might have granted rights to the publisher to use.

I was nearly put off by one of the other reviews which said the item was not as described but that has not been my experience. Would recommend , the troll encounter episode, Bilbo's meeting with Gollum in the Misty Mountains and Smaug with his treasure horde in Lonely Mountain. Measuring around 18 cm x 24 cm x 3 cm, the pale green cloth-like cover has a subtle touch of gold colouring to the front & spine that mischievously glints in the change of light.

But I just cannot imagine fun artwork of this sort making its appearance in an edition of LOTR anytime soon. We are two Tolkien nerds.
