Please do your self the great kindness of buying and reading Hedgewitch. As a teller of traditional tales, I enjoyed the links to real English folklore.

If she ignored the smell of mildew and the odd inquisitive mouse, it was almost cosyThus begins a stunning debut middle grade series Hedgewitch by Skye McKenna that I highly recommend if you’ve previously enjoyed the following Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend, Amari and the Night Brothers by BB Alston and The Worst Witch by Jill MurphyCassie has waited seven years for her mother to come back after leaving her at Fowell House boarding School. An easy 5 out of 5 stars…I swear, byThe seven stars,To stir myCauldron in healing,To weave my wardsIn defence,To fly by the lightOf wisdom,Standing with mySisters in serviceOf this land.

OK, I know that I'm not the target demographic but this is such a great read. I know that she will love Cassie just as I did. Here there are talking cats (and other magical animals), magic and a witches covenBut does Cassie find out what happened to her mother? It is the sort of story I would have been giddy over as a child, trying to replicate the witchy girl guide coven and wishing I could visit the village of Hedgely.

And is she still alive? The rich descriptions combined with twists and turns, makes Hedgewitch one of those rare books that utterly absorbs you within its pages. She escapes the boarding school to a place just outside of England where the world is full of magic and children are disappearing. Hedgewitch is a truly wonderful, imaginative book, managing to feel both unique and fresh and like a much-loved classic.

I bought "Hedgewitch" for my granddaughter's 12th birthday as an extra present. We first meet our heroine, Cassie, at her grim boarding school, where she spends most of her days hiding away from bullies.

I would highly recommend to both children and adults alike and I cannot wait for book two! It's a long time since a fantasy story satisfied me as much as this. She arrives in the village of Hedgely and discovers not only a home and relatives she had no idea existed, but magic.

It wasn’t a bad place to hide, all things considered; a narrow window provided light to read by and an upturned bucket served well enough as a seat. 💚 💚 💚…Witches aren’t born, they’re madeCassandra Morgan was hiding in the broom cupboard. Cassie runs away and is soon plunged into danger, before being rescued by the wise and sometimes grouchy, talking cat, Montague.
