I dropped a star due to the essentially non-existant instructions. I opted for this more expensive version over cheaper generic options based on other reviews and the need to ensure it's done right the first time. Well I didn't already have the hole saw, or clamps, although I did have Forstner bits that could do the job.

So I was a bit concerned knowing I don't have a powerful drill (battery powered only), and I'd seen some suggestions for clamping two pieces of plywood and using a hole saw as well. Just to be clear--that interior ring is plastic and does get beaten up some in the process, which means you probably can only do a few doors before you'd need to replace that black plastic ring, which is removable, but I don't know where you could buy a replacement. Had to hand chisel those out, would have saved a lot of time had it came with a simple jig for this to use with a router. .

Thought I’d practice with some 2x4 before cutting the actual door. I had to purchase this when I realized that deadbolt holes from 20 years ago don't match today's 2 1/8" standards. How could that be possible?

However, I was worried about the potential for screwing that up--given it was an already-drilled hole---the pilot guide would be relatively worthless. I had no idea my old deadbolt was of smaller diameter. Was great for cutting the holes, but lacked a jig for cutting the latch inserts like some products I've seen have.

It was a good choice. I'm not sure it really helped. I got my old deadbolt off the door and went to insert the components for a new Schlange fancy-pantsy smart deadbolt. Only regret is not purchasing this sooner!
