Jan

As a young, working class (white) woman, I found yoga in a book front he 1970s on the shelf of a charity shop in the early nineties and was intrigued by the drawings and lifestyle it described. It seemed to fit my values. Yoga teaching is not my full time job but something I love to gift others when I can.

Nadia, I want to thank you for this gift of a book. I am loving every page of this book and falling deeper in love with my practice as I read it too.

I taught myself the poses and it was many years later in the 2000s that I found a class with an Indian teacher, and discovered the joy of being told when to breathe in, breathe out, move a limb and how etc; however the effect yoga had on my life choices, my mental health and my equilibrium were subtle at first, yet deep. Not only for opening your heart and sharing your story so freely, but for inspiring me to return to my local classes, the leisure centre, and to realise I can and must integrate this beautiful, ancient wisdom in my modern life. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in yoga; equally it is a human, heartfelt emotional tale of the becoming of a woman, through adversity and struggle. .

Thank you Nadia💙 My yoga journey continues but at times, like the author's, I questioned how I fit into the whitewashed and trendy studios full of gymnasts and dancer types. My teacher eventually gave me the gift of teaching yoga in exchange for many hours of discussion on the sutras and typing up his YTT manual. I need the poses for the meditative effects and when I don't have a strong practice, I notice how much I am missing in all areas of my life.
