What pained me the most about Sugar, was how she was so consumed by her pain that she could not recognise it. This book is about judgments, empathy, secrets, love, loss, self discovery, unpunished crime and racial injustice. 95/5⭐This Bitter Earth is out August 2022
I simply could not see where the plot was going. ". The first line of this book is captivating. It goes on to explore relationships and the author keeps the reader engaged through out.
Why? The first incident gruesome. She was like an onion, she had so many layers to peel away at. Jude, is/was the daughter of Pearl & Joe Taylor.
Sugar, was most certainly a product of her environment, she just required a lot of nurturing to reach her full potential. Sugar was so misunderstood yet so lovable, each main character in this book was so unique and thoroughly explained. The church ladies are worried for their husbands, the reverend had predicted her arrival and chosen one of them to persuade her to come to the fold.
Keep an eye on the names of all the characters mentioned to stay afloat of this stories direction. Sugar arrives in the small town of Bigelow, much to the disapproval of the neighbourhoods watch - the Judgemental Witches (women) of Bigelow. Their unlikely pairing brings out the best in each other and the hidden parts of one another, like all great friendships do. I grew to love and hate the characters, a sign of good writing.
As the story progressed her vulnerability was as clear as day. "What it needed was a little love & attention. Sugar is a reminder of everything that Pearl has lost and never known; her daughter, her intimacy, her desires etc.
