Finally, my parents bought me my own copy of the omnibus edition - which contained all three books - the two previously mentioned along with 'UFOs. It’s suitably creepy without being terrifying and he’s hardly put it down!

It will frighten the grandchildren. Like many of the other reviewers of this amazing book, this was such a big part of my childhood - growing up in the late 70's and early 80's. The most haunted village in England I also found very scary - especially the stories about the ghosts of the hanging schoolmaster and the screaming man who got buried under the clay. The terrific illustrations cannot be ignored.

I’ve heard a few people talk about this book with a sense of nostalgia, so I’ve bought it for my son’s ninth birthday. As Reece Shearsmith states in his foreword, "Its macabre contents stayed with me my whole life. And also the books falling off the shelf by their own accord in the attic - genuinely terrifying to a young child in those pre-internet and CGI special effect laden days.
