Ultimately some knowledge of the game of Rugby Union and its players will help understand some of the 'banter', but it is so much more than the usual ex-player's memoirs! I am an ex-player of the game at a very junior level and as a fan, have been privileged to see Doddie play on numerous occasions at my local club Newcastle Falcons, but actually the part of the book I appreciated the most was Doddie's approach to dealing with his MND (Motor Neurone Disease) diagnosis in 2017. Ultimately, what comes through in the book very strongly, is Doddie's strength of character and ability to find humour in some of the more unusual and challenging of situations he faced.
He was a legend on the rugby field and will undoubtedly be an ongoing source of inspiration for many who are faced with a similarly life-changing event. Doddie was kind enough to sign the book for me before it was shipped. A terrific read, buy it!
I found myself trying to stop the dust that had entered the room getting into my eyes on more than one occasion. Firstly, you don't need to be a massive rugby fan to read this book. I would heartily recommend this book for ANYONE who has either received a life-changing medical diagnosis or knows someone who has. This book is inspirational in some ways and extremely poignant in others.
