2- Put the coffee when the appliance asks for it, and not before or after (otherwise, it will fall into the waste container). There now seems to be more play/movement up and down between the two settings than frankly there ever was, and it completely fixed the problem. Great! If you only drink Ristretto (25ml), and you are the only one to use this machine, it will consume more water for rinsing than for making coffee.

If something is stopping air flow, the frothing performance will be poor, even though the same amount of steam is being pumped out. And if you are concerned about the quality of your coffee, you will understand that the machine needs rinsing to ensure quality. I knew that it would take a bit of running through, and that the first 5-10 espressos would just be thrown away (it says so in the manual) but even after that, I felt the coffee was weak and bitter.

This maintenance is very easy and it is best to do it every week: open the hatch on the side of the machine, take out the pump unit with 2 fingers, pass the filter under water and then clean it with a microfiber cloth, check the lubrication and, if necessary, top up using edible grease made for automatic coffee machines. This seems to draw a few complaints but is really not difficult at all, as the flip-up lid acts as a handle; as long as you have space to move your arm over the top of the machine, you can pull up the tank and then move it off to either side to remove and fill. This machine replaces a high-end Krups espresso grinder (all controls combined in a touchscreen) which showed me that the people at SEB (machine designed and made in France but the ceramic mill makes coffee with doses adapted to those who like lighter coffee) were far from the Italian know-how to make a good Ristretto or Cappuccino, even with Illy or Segafredo coffee used.
