Cummins pens so many twists throughout Into the Dark though, that my feelings towards Julianne coiled more than a corkscrew. The setting of Midtown-on-Sea is so vivid and really helps to bring the themes of privilege and wealth to life, in particular. The whole Holden family are suitably puzzling, with all but the son Artie being thoroughly unlikeable. Another twisty roller-coaster ride from the talented pen of Fiona Cummins.

I read it in one obsessive sitting, the unpredictable nature of it kept me hooked. The house is the physical representation of the Holden’s status, wealth and progression from the past. But all is not necessarily as it seems, no matter how bright the shine gleams…The other aspect of this novel that is superbly executed is the characterisation.
