The finishing touches are that the edges of the pages are tinted green with Tengwar (Elven) Script emblazoned down them, as well as a built-in bookmark. During this time he wrote extensively on such topics as the nature of evil in Arda, the origin of Orcs, the customs of the Elves, the nature and means of Elvish rebirth, and the "flat" world and the myth of the Sun.

Obviously the book itself is completely amazing I highly recommend that’s why I’ve given a 5 star but I was really disappointed in the condition it came in when it was delivered all the edges were damaged . There are five sections overall, but the main part is the ‘Quenta Silmarillion’, which is the story of the Elves and the holy gems known as the Silmarils, and is set during the First Age of Middle-Earth. Many years after the war, encouraged by the success of The Hobbit, Tolkien submitted an incomplete but more fully developed version of The Silmarillion to his publisher, but they rejected the work as being obscure and "too Celtic".

The beauty of this book is that a connection is made with the characters in much fewer words than a fully fleshed out story. Really great to finally have The Silmarillion in an unjacketed hardback which matches the other books in the series.

The print is larger in the Silmarillion. The publisher, George Allen & Unwin, instead asked Tolkien to write a sequel to The Hobbit, which became his significant novel The Lord of the Rings. In the late 1950s he again began work on The Silmarillion, but much of his writing from this time is concerned not as much with the narratives themselves as with the theological and philosophical underpinnings of the work.

The next section, Quenta Silmarillion, which forms the bulk of the collection, chronicles the history of the events before and during the First Age, including the wars over the Silmarils which gave the book its title. Whilst these don't have genuine cloth covers, they do feature a tactile textured finish. He renewed work on The Silmarillion after completing The Lord of the Rings, when he greatly desired to publish the two works together. My advice is to check out the tips on pronunciation in the back of the book before starting — it’ll make your progress much easier.

(it would be a 5 star if it weren't for the little damages) As I said earlier it’s not the easiest read in the world but it is absolutely essential if you wish to know more about Middle-Earth and, especially, the Elves. anyhow, this edition is amazing, a must have, and for this price is an excellent option for collectors and non collectos. If you are new to Tolkien and have come here from the films or the TV show — or simply want to find out more about the history of Middle-Earth — then this is the place to come.
