The story is here re-worked by Christopher Tolkien who has constructed a fully coherent narrative for the tale, avoiding invention but with extensive new detail from his father’s copious piles of notes and manuscripts, to give the reader the most complete and best-ever story of Hurin and his children. The paper quality is thick, smooth and white, the text printing perfect and each chapter heading decorated with one of Alan Lee’s monochrome images illustrating the subject matter of the following text.

It was subsequently re-written and extended by Christopher Tolkien and published as a standalone story in ‘Unfinished Tales’ in 1980. I have been collecting this whole set slowly over the years, they are all lovely books, and look fantastic on a bookshelf. I didn't read the book yet, but as you can see Amazon delivered this book in perfect state:- a beautiful matt slipcover without damage- fits perfectly with the other Harper Collins collection of Tolkien- nice pictures on special paper and some black/white sketches of Alan Lee in the book- foldable map at the end of the bookSo according to me a perfect book for any Tolkienlover! Lee’s eight full-page, full colour paintings add a great deal to the book, conveying the essential mood music of the story with true mastery of artistic execution.
