This is a prequel to the show and is wonderfully written to tell the tale of Vignette or Vini, Stonemoss, a faerie and Tourmaline Larou as they meet for the first time and grow closer, and is narrated by Karla Crome from the perspective of the vivacious Tourmaline. Whilst there isn't a lot of fantasy element in Tangle in the Dark, it's a wonderful way to return to the Row and I loved getting some insight into Vignette and Tourmaline's lives even if it's quite sad. I absolutely love the Carnival Row series on Amazon so when I discovered Tangle in the Dark by Stephanie K Smith and I wasn't disappointed.
The world-building is excellently done, and you feel wonderfully immersed in the fantasy world of the series, but rather than being on the Row, we are in the Fae lands of Tirnanoc before the war causes the fae to flee. The romance of Vignette and Tourmaline is both beautiful and filled with anxiety and torment - some of which is, without doubt down to Tourmaline's in ability to see when she has things good and to treasure Vignette for the wonder she is. Now I desperately need series two to watch and more books from this world - this novella was the perfect enticement to draw me back in.
